Yesterday, after watching SAKURAN at the National Museum I headed over to Sunshine Plaza. That took me past Prinsep Street. And I chanced upon this:

MANGA KISSA - Japanese Style Comic Cafe
It’s a Japanese-style comic cafe that calls itself generically “MANGA KISSA” (and the homepage looks like a generically lo-fi Japanese website too). As I was hurrying along (it’s 6.30pm, almost close to closing time for shops at Sunshine Plaza), I didn’t get to go in to sneak a peek.

Some days ago, I picked up one of these vials in a random encounter: a bottle of mana potion.

MANA Energy Potion
It’s supposed to be an energy supplement for gamers to last long-hour gaming sessions. It’s not on sale in Singapore though - a friend of mine imported a carton from the States.

So, my cousin (Cuz) finally realised one of the things we’d always wanted to do when we’re kids: making a comic book. In this instance, Cuz started his own indy (if not, egoistical) imprint “Adrian Teo Presents” and took Troy’s The Resident Tourist from screen to print.

Kian Bee
The Resident Tourist jogged our childhood memories too. For the two of us, other than playing computer games (both of us owned Datamini IBM XT clones back then, playing games like Thexder, Leisure Suit Larry, Ultima etc etc using 5.25″ floppy disks with no harddrive - though I had a CGA monitor while he had a better EGA monitor that displayed more colours), we also tried to draw our own comic books. I’ve done a series of entries on the stuff I drew during those days. When I was cleaning out my archives, I unearthed some of Cuz’s works…

Animax Asia presented their all-star creative team for the anime feature “LaMB“.

ANIMAX’s “LaMB” ALL STARS
Animax Asia is sparing no efforts in assembling the best creative talents for their first original anime production. Peach Blossom Media is on board as the production studio, putting together Ryosuke Tei (程亮弼) as director, Imaginary Friends Studios (IFS) for concept art and designs, and Yasufumi Soejima (ソエジマ ヤスフミ) on the storyboards. With Simple Plan and The Click Five on the soundtrack, “LaMB” is gonna rock!

The premier issue of FREEDOM FORMULA hit the comics stands last week on shipment day. Personally, this is the most anticipated title from Radical Comics, not just because it’s a genre that I love - cyberpunk sci-fi with exo-suits and mecha action - this is a 100% Made-in-Singapore product.

FREEDOM FORMULA - GHOST OF THE WASTELAND #1
When I flipped open the card-stock cover, what I saw far exceeded my expectations. If there’s any homegrown comic that a Singaporean fanboy/otaku can boast to the world, this is a comic series that they’d be proud to show off. It’s so good that I bought two copies of the first issue with variant covers painted by Kai.

Anime fans in Singapore will have another channel to watch the latest English sub-titled anime (legally). Cathay’s E2MAX at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard has teamed up with GDH K.K, the parent company of GONZO, to simulcast the latest offerings of anime titles currently on air in Japan.

ENTER THE ANIME CHAMBER
Come October, anime fans can catch “LINEBARRELS OF IRON” 「鉄のラインバレル」 at any of the 12 Anime Chambers at E2MAX@Cine-L9. GONZO has established a partnership with Cathay Organisation to make this possible. LINEBARREL is the latest mecha anime to debut in Autumn, adapted from the manga series by Eiichi Shimizu (清水栄一) & Tomohiro Shimoguchi (下口智裕). (This pair started off as a doujin circle “Nadegata Circus” 「ナデガタサーカス」. Their Kamen Rider inspired online doujinshi “HYBRID INSECTOR” attracted alot of attention then. “Linebarrels of Iron” was their first published work, serialised on CHAMPION RED magazine from Akita Shoten)
